E Portfolio: Final Project

By, Lawrence Waterhouse

Over the past 4 weeks in our ASEM class we were instructed to create a digital blog to upload our works to. Through reading and live performances, we improved our understanding of music writing in the 21st century. One could easily see that our enjoyment within this class was immense. Many of us haven’t had the privilege of discussing such a personal topic in an academic setting. Each assignment that we were assigned provided deep though while keeping our imaginations and creativity alive.

Annotated Playlist

In this assignment we were asked to gather a playlist of around 10 tracks of a band or artist that best describes their career. I decided to tackle one of my favorite bands for this project because of my knowledge of their history and my love for their execution. Rush was the band I chose and my knowledge of their music that was released at the beginning of their career allowed me to dive into music that most music fans are not aware of. I chose 10 of their songs that tackled problems with social class, race, and ethnicity; topics and ideas that were rarely discussed during the 1970’s especially in the United States.

This was one of the essays that I decided to revise. I added more information to each track about my early experience with Rush that was lacking in my initial submission. I have been a significant fan of this band for a while, and I needed to show the repercussions of this within my own life. In addition, I needed to add more information from our readings within my writing. I needed to use examples from other writers and develop my own ideas from their prior thoughts. My friend Patrick was the one that informed me of this advice.

Desert Island Disc

The second assignment discussed the age-old question of what album would you take to a deserted island. As one can see this was an adventure of an assignment and changed my look at musicals and my view of the album I chose. The album that I chose for this assignment was Chromatatica by Lady Gaga. This song has truly changed my life in the past 4 years, and I am so glad it was released during such a dramatic time in my life. Strictly listening to one album for the rest of my life is a terrifying thought that I’m glad is hypothetical but raises many questions I’ve never thought about. For example, at what moment would I become bored with the album I chose? I would guess rather quickly, and I could never choose one album. But Chromatatica is the closest decision I could come to since almost 100% of the songs on the album I’m in love with.

Live Review

During this course we were instructed to view a live concert of our choosing and write a descriptive review of the interaction we had. At first, I thought I wasn’t going to be able to discuss a live concert since COVID has been so prevalent, but Luckly my mom’s band was performing in a live venue, and I was able to secure tickets with her help. The concert was an amazing time and showed me how much fun small bar music can be, especially during a pandemic (haha). In my essay I discussed interview questions, the atmosphere of the venue, and the music that was played. All questions were answered through the help of my mom and her band mates. It was an eye-opening experience and brought me to love music in a whole new way.

This was one of the essays I decided to revise. I wanted to create a more immersive view of my experience and show the love I had for the music and the people performing. Discussing the sound of the music and how the small bar changed the sound in a significant way making the vibrations larger. The whole bar was shaking for the 30 hours of bands performing.

My portfolio is an obscure music group that many people are not aware of, even individuals that I consider close to me. From hard rock to electric dance pop, the genres that I chose were unique and flew under the radar for most individuals. My entire life I was never held down to one genre, frequently bands in all types of music were coming in and out of my playlists. A lot of people understand who Rush and Lady Gaga are in the public eye, but my analysis of their music is unique entirely. This was thanks to the descriptive assignment given to us within this class. The assignment forced the students to dive deeper into their own music whil learning about descriptive musical writing. Before beginning these assignments, I didn’t want to stray from the music I felt comfortable with. I chose the music I’ve listened to the most over the past few years to create a sense of confidence in my writing that would benefit my explanation and entertainment fact.

My portfolio’s content reflects how I will approach music writing in the future. My portfolio has created a distinct change in how I perceive music within my world. There is a lost world behind every song that takes dedication to uncover but it is very rewarding once successful. You can see this the most in my first WP, where I uncover the 10 best songs from Rush, where I dive into Geddy Lee’s heritage and connect his family’s past to his lyrical design in Red Sector A the song. I truly will not approach music in the same way after taking this class. Music is a science and can be studied extensively.

Creativity is the essence of music; it is the main draw for most musicians and listeners. The creation of life out of nothing is the idea of music and has been around since the beginning of humanity. If I had to suggest advice for the upcoming class, I would first tell them to be creative with the music that the student choice. Stay away from popular music that everyone is accustomed to and dive deep within your own music and find an artist that speaks to you. In addition, one should try to take this class in person. Not saying this class was completely lacking without interaction but discussion within a classroom would no doubt improve the learning for our classmates

Desert Island Disk: Chromatica

By,

Lawrence Waterhouse

The deserted island idea has been discussed within my household since I was a young child. “If you were stranded on a desert island with only three items, what would you bring”. This question has puzzled me for a century now since there are so many options and combinations of items to bring on this journey but in this project, I will be replacing the three items with only one album. Even though I have struggled with answering the original scenario, I intuitively knew the album I would be taking on this adventure. This essay will also be taken extremely literally, and environmental, mental, and physical factors will be considered. This will not be considered as a hypothetical situation, and I will dive deep into my mental state to clearly describe why I chose this album.

Chromatica I

Creating an intro should be a simple experience, listening to the songs within the album to find an inner feeling behind the words and chords. The feeling found from this self-exploration should be used to create the intro of an album. The listener can hear the purpose and meaning behind Chromatica I.

This song would surprisingly be one of the last songs I would listen to after my plane or boat crashes upon this island. I would not overwork the music that I already loved when I was living my life safely in the United States.

Alice

One of my favorite songs on the album is an aggressive piece of music that sets up the tone for the rest of the album. This song became a huge part of my life when I was in the rebellious phase of my life. I would use this song to feel superior to my siblings and friends, but little did I know I was more lost than any of them. This song would be my hunting song. While I’m gathering in the forest or stalking a small animal, I will have lady gaga in my ear helping me stay calm, agile, and ready for the kill.

Stupid Love

This is a song will be used as the “picture” or memory of my past life. The title may not show it , but this song is a sporadic time bomb of sound and emotion that vibrates through your very soul. The song shakes you while explaining the difficulties of everyday love. This is the music that I love. Stuff that is not completely linear and attacks different problems in your life at the same time. The lyric of this song reminds me of the stupid stress and agony I had when I was living my normal life, but not in a depressing way.

Rain on Me

This song I will not be listening to while I am on my journey to this deserted island. To be completely honest this is my least favorite song by Lady Gaga and even one of my least favorite songs ever. And let the record know Lady Gaga is my favorite artist. There is a large possibility that since I won’t be listening to this portion of the album frequently, I would develop a secret obsession. This would happen since I would grow tired from the other song that I would play on repeat.

Free Women

Free Women is a revolutionary song for this period of pop music and develop a new sound to electric dance music. The song follows Queen Gaga’s journey to self-discovery and inner peace. I have always been extremely attracted to Gaga’s beauty and intellect, but this song sent my love to another galaxy. I will use this song when I get lonely and struggle to understand why this terrible event happened to me and how I will survive here all alone.

Fun Tonight

This is the most depressing song for the album. Delves into the understanding that individuals try so hard to be “happy” within their life not understanding the key attributes that make them content with the decision they make.

This will be my funeral song, it’s scary to think about but if I was stranded on an island there would be a small chance of surviving since I’m a normal person living in a sheltered society. If I am unable to survive during this period of struggle, I will play this song and know I tried my absolute hardest to survive.

Chromatica II

This song is a notable example of an intermission within an album. This is considered the intermission of the album. A great Segway to a more depressing. I will not be spending a lot of time on this song since it is under a minute long. Most individuals skip over this song but deep down it shows the progression of the rest of the album, leading up to the third part.

911

A great beginning to the second half of the album. This song, like its name, reminds me of the rules and society that I left behind once I came to this island and shows me that not everything in my old life I supported or wanted to be around. Like her song Schube from an earlier album, it is difficult to find the meaning after your first 30 listens you really need to hear the words over and over to create your own meaning. This is a significant reason I chose this album for this project.

Plastic Doll

Plastic doll is my favorite song on this album and will be played most of my journey through this island. This song has changed me as an individual within our society and has developed a lot of my ideas on life. Taught me self-respect, love, and pain. I will not be listening to this song until I have a good lay of the land and understand that I will be able to stay on this island for enough time. Once I am comfortable with my surroundings, I will be able to relax slightly and spend time listening to this song on my solar powered record player.

Sine Form Above

Dang Elton John really knows how to write a song. This song was the finale of the album and was an amazing addition to the soundtrack. Gaga and Johns duet performs was hypnotic and psychedelic, everything that I love within a song. This song reminds me of the birth of an individual. Not a natural birth but the birth of someone becoming the person they always wanted to be. The moment I think I was truly born was after I made a traumatic mistake in my life, and I had to come clean to the people that I love. And once they forgave me and I forgave myself I was able to confront the person I was and love the person I am.

Although I doubt, I would be able to survive on an island for long but if I was able to brin an album Chromatica is an absolute no brainer. No matter the album I bring on this island I bet I would also get tired of listening to the same tracks over and over again, even if it is one of my favorite albums.

There Goes Jordy, a Pivotal Moment as a Writer and Son

Woke up early on December 10, 2021, and my anticipation was finally going to be fulfilled when I arrive at lucy’s dinner in Pleasantville New York. Since covid struck last year, I was unable to access any concerts during the quarantine and this day I would be scratching this uncontrollable itch for live music. I would be seeing one of my favorite bands in a small venue surrounded by my family and friends. The band is named There Goes Jordy, and my mother is the lead singer of this triumphant musical group. There Goes Jordy is not on tour during this time and is a small cover band that performs at local bars. Their genre are rock and folk songs that have impacted the members of the band. This was the only concert I was able to access within the State of New York since the COVID cases dramatically increased over this time.

I entered the bar intimidated since I have not been in a bar during the typical hours, 8-12. But I was still overwhelmed by this proud feeling of being related to the main attraction. I’ve heard all the songs that her band performs but not to the extent of what I was about to hear and deep down I knew that within the moment. The bar was dimly lit and held around 30 people max. Just the way I like it, intimate and personal. I remember the concert significantly more when there are less distractions around me during a concert or music festival. From the life of the crowd to sensory overloads a small crowd is the pinnacle of musical experience for me.

There Goes Jordy was the last band to perform this evening, arriving on stage around 11:00. There were a few thoughts that I had before the performance began, for example, was the melody going to be shaky since my mom and her band mates weren’t able to practice before hand because they needed to test negative, my mom has also had difficulty forming chords with her tennis elbow, and finally how well was there performance going to be perceived by the audience. These questions would all be answered by the end of their concert.

The first song to their performance was Don’t Go Away by The Beths, a band I truly haven’t experienced at all. A calm and organized soft rock song that is beautiful to the ears and has a clear beginning, middle and end that pulls the listener deeper into the lyrics. The melody of the song was consistent through each of the three band members, and you could barely tell three individuals were playing at the same time. The audience was deeply involved in the music, and I could easily tell they were enjoying a song that was familiar to them. The following song in the set list had a different approach than its predecessor. The song Arabella by the artic Monkeys was the second song on the set list and majority of the audience was not prepared for this song choice. It is an uncommon song that most people in their 40’s is not aware of. But the clear speech of the lyrics allows the story of the song to be understood by everyone. The song has an instrumental introduction and intermission that connect the song completely and create a story that isn’t easy to see at first.

What stood out to me the most during this performance was the finale. Ohh La La by the Faces is a beautiful song about understanding that you’ve past your prime and need to accept the life you’ve already lived. A beautiful discussion of life that everyone needs to hear before they have even passed their own prime. This song was the perfect finale for any small concert and had every individual within the audience dancing in their chairs or on the limited dance floor. The lead guitarist was also not interrupted by her tennis elbow, the concert went smoothly and was a tremendous success through the eyes of the audience and myself included.

WP#1: Rush

Working Man

In 1981, The Canadian band Rush delivered the killer track, Working Man, that kick-started a luxurious career that none of the members anticipated. In an age where Britain and the United States were dominating the music scene Rush was able to give a fresh look at rock and roll and psychedelic rock. With a singer that pours his heart into his lyrics and a drummer that some critics called “the third hand”, it isn’t surprising that the world began to obsess. Working Man appealed to the blue-collar workers around the world, that desired a harder demeanor than bands like the Beetles or Beach Boys. The lyrics “lock it up, seven to eight, I go to work at nine, I got no time for living yeah because I’m working all the time” was a chorus that shock the very essence of our society. The ripples from this track are still seen today and continue to form the mentality of children and adults alike.

As a child, my parents understood who Rush was but didn’t value the strides that this band made during my parent’s childhood (this is not my parent’s fault Haha). Once I was around the age of 13, I started to dive deeper into the music that my father listened to as a child. This includes the glam rock bands of the late 70s and early 80s. while I was searching the internet for more bangers that I could rock out to. I crossed by this song and after just a few listens I was hooked. I could tell there was no going back to my old genre of rock. The “rush” was permanently in my Bloodstream.

Farewell to Kings

In the early age of Rush’s career, the band distinctively belonged to the hard rock genre but that would quickly change with the release of A Farewell to Kings album. This album was released during the psychedelic age of the mid-80s, capitalizing on the growing interest in music, Rush was able to come into their own. The specific song named after the album cover is a great example of the shift in genres. With a more flowy rhythm and hypnotic lyrics, the band was able to create a safe place for hippies and stoners. Although Rush was changing their genre, this did not mean that they dropped hard rock completely. A mixture of both albums was accurately depicted in their music but specifically the sound A Farewell to Kings.

After listening to Rush’s music, the audience can see that the band is fighting against the individuals in our world that control the majority of the power. And this accurately depicts this. The band expressed their discomfort in our world at the time and used their power of influence to convey their message to the world. An example of this expression can be heard in the lyric “beating down the magnitude, and stopping at the wise”. This lyric means destroying the individuals or entities with too much power while leaving the groups that are smart enough to help the entire society. Government change should be addressed before social reform.

Limelight

The magnum opus of Rush’s career defined Rush as a rock and roll legend that will be passed down for generations to come. If you haven’t heard this anthem, take the time to listen to the 4:19 masterpiece. Even individuals that are unable to listen to the rock genre are able to appreciate the musical symphony of “Limelight”.

“Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation, get on with the fascination The real relation, the underlining mean.” Wow just saying this lyric in my head almost brings a tear to my eye. The ability for Rush to understand the pros and cons of their future in the music industry is beyond self-conscious and shows their audience that they aren’t in it for the money they are in this business to change the lives of millions of people.

This quote unironically discusses the emotions that come with extreme success within the media industry, little did Rush know that this would be their future shortly after this song was released. Limelight shot Rush to fame that they have never experienced in their entire career. The dramatic stance that Limelight takes when discussing a successful future in music is eerie since the band is aware of the cons that are situated within the luxurious life of a rock star. Even though they are aware of this curse that fame possesses and they are still fully interested in pursuing this path.

The Twilight Zone

The Twilight Zone was released in their 40th-anniversary album “2112”. The song follows a story that acts more as a ballad than a structured song. This is uncommon for Rush but has been seen before. The 21st-century technology allows Rush to manipulate their sound in a way unseen during their prime. The Twilight Zone acts as a glimpse into what could have been if this band came out during a more modern time. Synthesizers and computer editing changed the typical sound of Rush without destroying the essence of the band that resonated with so many people. Many bands from Rush’s era struggled with the evolution of music over a long period of time but Rush was able to manipulate their sound without losing the X-Factor that made Rush such a beloved band.

An interesting fact about the song “the Twilight Zone” is that Rush’s lyricist and drummer, Neil Peart was a huge fan of the tv show The Twilight Zone and based the song on the ambiance of the award-winning tv show. This song didn’t reach significant fame for the band but was a success for the band as a whole since there was a large amount of work that was put into producing this song and album. Most bands are unable to perform for 40 years and Rush was able to pass that by 50 years and make it into the rock and roll hall of fame.

Red Sector A

The most divergent song that Rush has ever produced. A dramatic symphony that delves into the mindset of a prisoner of an unfair leader. There are many references to global tragedies that have occurred in our past within this song. The turmoil of war and imprisonment are hardships that all nations have seen in their history and Rush uses their platform to discuss the history of one of their members. Geddy Lee the lead singer of Rush was raised in a Jewish household and has respected his religion by discussing difficult topics within their music and in interviews. This hasn’t been delved into as much but I would predict that Red Sector A is a great analysis of the torture that Jewish individuals went through during the Holocaust during World War II. An example of this assumption is heard in the lyric, “Ragged light, ragged grey, skeletons they shuffle away, shouting guards and smoking guns, cut down the unlucky ones, I clutch the wire fence until my finger bleed, a wound that will not heal, a heart that can not feel, hoping that the horror will recede, hoping tomorrow we all be free”. This is one of the most disturbing and insightful lyrics Rush has ever produced. Geddy Lee was born to two polish Jewish immigrants during the second to last year of the second world war. He was able to see the destruction of this genocide first hand, imprinting on his mind and driving his ambition throughout his life and career.

Time Stand Still

Close your eyes, what is the first song you think of when you hear when you think of summer…. Boys of summer, summer of 69, or something that has a more emotional connection to you. When I dream of summer there is only one song that comes to mind, and that is the masterpiece Time Stand Still. There is no rhyme or reason to my connection to this song but there is an emotional relationship that I have with this song that hasn’t faded since I first uncovered it. Time Stand Still doesn’t reference any summer activity or weather occurrence but when I close my eyes and feel the sound of Neal Peart’s rhythm the image of laying on the beach at midnight with a person in my arms is the only thought on my mind. Even though I’m still a young individual the sound of this anthem sends me back to a simpler time where my worries were smaller and less significant. Time truly stands still when I toss this song on in my car and I will cherish the memories that I have experienced while listening to this amazing track.

This song reminds me to never let time slip away from me and be thankful for every person within my life. We only have one life, and waiting for your moment to come will leave you disappointed. Always strive to be the person you imagine your childhood self would be proud of and express a want for change throughout your day.

Far Cry

The sound Far Cry by Rush was a progressive version of the typical music that rush was realizing during the 2000s. Moving away from psychedelic rock and tackling a more hardcore rock scene that struggled as a genre during this age. With fans wishing rock was more like the 70s Rush was able to change the perspective of the Rock world with this amazing song, album. It’s amazing how much Rush progresses in their music even though they were significantly more popular during the early age of rock and roll.

“It’s a far cry from the world we thought we would inherit, it’s a far cry from the way we thought, we would share it, you can almost feel the current flowing, you can almost see the circuits blowing”.

Neil Peart was the individual that wrote the song Far Cry. The song was a reminder that his generation started off great with individuals believing in peace and love. They fought for what they wanted and wouldn’t turn away without an honest fight. The modern time has changed this mentality and Rush is longing for the times were retribution and love were morals that were held in high regard by all individuals within the society. Truly is a far cry from what it used to be in music and our society.

Spirit of the Radio

Finally, we will discuss my favorite song of all time, Spirit of the Radio. The song formed a significant amount of my overarching ideas within our society. Who would have guessed that music would have more of an impact than school, other forms of media, and my interactions with real people? The song was dedicated to an alternative music station based in Toronto Canada called CFNY. This station was a safe haven for music that wasn’t typically played on the pop stations of the time. They gave a voice to a generation of individuals that felt a lack of representation within the music community. Bands that were played on this station consisted of alternative and soft rock bands like Cheap Trick and Toto.

All this machinery making modern music, Can still be open-hearted, Not so coldly charted, It’s really just a question of your honesty, Yeah, your honesty, One likes to believe in the freedom of music, But glittering prizes, And endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah”

This is the pinnacle of alternative and soft rock lyrics. So much pain and defeat in Geddy Lee’s voice during this section of the song. Like he already knew it was too late for his favorite genre of music. The times are changing and we need to accept that but also remember the aspects that shaped the rise of one of the best bands of all time.

Rush

Try to draw from all of their albums in an effort to illustrate the artist/band’s evolution or growth, and not necessarily the Top 10 most popular hit songs (if those exist).

Working man

Spirit of the Radio

Finally, we will discuss my favorite song of all time

“All this machinery making modern music and still be open-hearted, lots of bullets shouted and the question all your honesty… yeah your honesty, one likes to believe in the freedom of music, glittering eyes and endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity.”
